The Impressionist painters completely revolutionised modern painting - not only through their use of modern, bright synthetic pigments, but also through the fresh use of colour. Shadows were not seen as black - but shades of different colour. Perhaps the most interesting experiment detailing this notion is Monet's studies of light on Rouen cathedral. The shadowy colours reflect beautiful hues and tones of blues, browns, lilacs and greys.
