When I first came across a discussion of Homer's quirky colour-word usage, I laughed out loud! Colour-names have had marked changes as preferences and particular colour trends emerge; or particularly in how human perception of those colours have changed over the years (for example; consider how much of a branding exercise the Colour of the Year becomes each year).
I prefer to think of Homer's 'wine dark sea' as a particular instance in time - a moment when the light was just so, and transformed what was in view (have a look at the various discussions of the wine dark sea - it makes for interesting reading!). I have had such a moment on Table Mountain late one evening - I could hardly wrap my head around the mind-altering explosion of strange colour!
Wine dark combines shades of plum, and faded red, and a hint of steely blue into a medium-toned variegated colourway.
Care Instructions: For long term fibre and colour care a gentle, PH neutral detergent (preferably natural/organic) and cold water rinse is recommended. Refrain from excessive wringing. Dry flat, avoiding prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight.
